Sheila M. Coonan, a character actress who often portrayed Irish women during her 40-year career, died of liver disease Tuesday in St. Vincent's Hospital in Greenwich Village. She was 66 years old.
On Broadway Miss Coonan acted in ''Seidman and Son,'' ''A Taste of Honey,'' ''The Great White Hope,'' ''Red Roses for Me'' and ''The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.'' On television, in addition to continuing roles in ''The Guiding Light,'' ''Love of Life'' ''Search for Tomorrow'' and ''All My Children,'' her credits included ''The Hallmark Hall of Fame,'' ''The Defenders'' and ''The Nurses.'' Her screen work included ''The Park is Mine'' and ''Without a Trace.''
She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. John P. Finn of Pte. Claire, Canada, and Pat Coonan, of Montreal.
A memorial mass will be held at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, at Sullivan and Houston Streets, today at 4 P.M.
