- He died at "Kelso", his brother-in-law's home. His brother-in-law was Colonel Surgeon Edwin James Fairland (Army Medical Service).
He died of Chronic Nephritis and Uraemia, eight days after being wed. [1]

- MONUMENT:-
There is a memorial to him on the south wall of the Cathedral Cloisters at Chichester Cathedral. The inscription reads
"TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF LIEUT-COLONEL GEORGE LEONARD THOMSON SON OF MAJOR-GENERAL W. B. THOMSON C. B. WHO DIED WHEN IN COMMAND OF THE 35TH ROYAL SUSSEX REGT. ON THE 14TH OCTOBER 1898, AGED 48.
THIS TABLET IS ERECTED BY HIS BROTHER OFFICERS IN AFFECTIONATE REMEMBRANCE".
